Inspired again: “Blind date with a sunset”

I was lurking around Mike in WNY’s flickr images & saw something to inspire me again. I learned about a writing exercise a few years ago. To write a story from quoting only. To write a [full] story from just what two people are saying to each other [like a play] so readers can make up their own emotions as they read along. I did this once before but not freely from looking at a picture & never before on my blog, until now. Yikes! ;)

The picture is not to be reused at all without permission & it belongs to Mike in WNY. The names & places are 110% fictitious. Here goes… one more for the romantic drama movies.

Blind date with a sunset

“Excuse me. Are you Sam?”

“Yeah. Well, Samantha. Are you Charlie?”

“That is me. The one & only. The best Charlie you could ever meet.”

“Jenna said you’d be comical at first.”

“Jenna didn’t say I’d be meeting such a striking young lady.”

“She said you’d also be overly charming.”

“Jenna never lies. What are you reading?”

“A mid-summer night’s dream.”

“Ooh, a classic”

“You know books?”

“Not at all. I thought I could impress you after my charm.”

“Impressed is an understatement.”

“What was that you said?”

“Impressive. I said impressive. Yes, impressive.”

“Since you’re not reading anymore. How about we walk along the peir?”

“Okay.”

“Ah! Smell the evening air.”

“All I smell is the glue factory over there.”

“Ah! Have you never seen such a glorious sunset?”

“No I haven’t. It is beautiful today.”

“Yes. Beautiful indeed.”

“Jenna didn’t tell me you’d make me blush so quickly.”

“Jenna holds back on some things.”

“Anyways. Tell me about you.”

“What? Jenna didn’t tell you everything?”

“Well a few things but I’d like to hear it from you.”

“You just love the sound of my voice, don’t you?”

“AH! You’re a smooth talker, huh? So let’s hear it.”

“I work at a dead end job in the city & do some free lance writing.”

“What kind of writing?”

“Romantic drama. My darling… Will you marry me?”

“Will you get up off one knee? People are watching.”

“You think I’m funny, don’t you?”

“Funny? Strange is a better word.”

“God you have a great smile.”

“You never answered. What kind of free lance writing?”

“Don’t laugh. Drama stories.”

“You are pretty dramatic.”

“I said don’t laugh. You’re laughing.”

“No, no. I’m not laughing.”

“Yes you are. What about you? What do you do?”

“I’m in school.”

“For?”

“Don’t laugh.”

“I swear I won’t.”

“I’m going to be a dentist.”

“Damn. I knew I should have brushed twice today.”

“That was funny. You’re laughing at me.”

“No more than you of I. Why a dentist? Is it torturing people with a drill you like most?”

“No. My father is a dentist.”

“Oh, ok. I won’t argue with that.”

“Oh my! Look at how far we walked. We should head back.”

“So soon?”

“Yeah. I have class first thing in the morning.”

“Alright. What would you like to talk about next?”

“The sunset we missed.”

“Time flies when you’re with the best Charlie you could meet.”

“I think you miss a lot of sunsets.”

“Who me? Naw. I catch them all. I write drama, the shimmering sun off the lake… sparkling in her eyes.”

“Ah, all the stuff you think the ladies love?”

“Well. Yeah. Didn’t you like hearing that?”

“Well, it looks like we’re back where we started.”

“Man, that was a fast walk.”

“Hmm?”

“Huh? Oh, nothing. Is this your car?”

“Yeah. It’s a clunker, I know.”

“It’s an Audi. Daaaamn. So what do you think? Was I the gentleman Jenna said I would be?”

“You were kind & sweet.”

“And?”

“And what?”

“And? Charming?”

“Yes. Charming too.”

“What else?”

“Jenna didn’t tell me how handsome you are.”

“That’s only because Tom is her most awesome-est dude.”

“You flutter your eyelashes like a dramatic one.”

“So. Can I call you some time?”

“Sure.”

“Well. It might be easier if I had your number.”

“I think Jenna didn’t tell you everything either. I know I have a pen in this bag somewhere. Here it is.”

“No paper?”

“Give me your hand.”

“That’s half a number.”

“I’ll give you the second half tomorrow morning.”

“What do you mean?”

“Get in. I’ll take you home.”

Another great show

Christopher Byrd had another great radio show last night. Elly in the City was the guest. They covered a lot of topics like her up-coming wedding & all points of Buffalo neighborhoods.

A day of remembrance
