Big Texas equals a big Burton win

Yes. I had the race on at work. Shhh… don’t tell my boss. ;) I’m getting Sunday regulars this way. [lol]

If you didn’t know, the other Jeff won. Here is the headline from NASCAR.com:

Burton becomes first repeat winner at Texas

FORT WORTH, Texas — Finally, a Texas two-step.

Jeff Burton passed Matt Kenseth on the final lap Sunday to become the first repeat winner at Texas, winning 10 years after he won the inaugural race.

Burton never led until he overtook Kenseth on the backstretch coming out of Turn 2 after more than 10 laps of trying to get past him. It was Burton’s 19th career victory.

That denied Kenseth, who won the Busch race Saturday, a weekend sweep. It also ended a four-race winning streak by Hendrick Motorsports.

There had been 11 different winners in the 11 races since Burton won the first race at the 1.5-mile, high-banked Texas track.

Jeff Gordon led 173 of 334 laps and finished fourth, the fifth top-five finish in the seven races this season for the Hendrick driver. But he is 0-for-13 at Texas, joining Phoenix and Homestead as the only active tracks where the four-time Nextel Cup champion hasn’t won.

Kenseth and Mark Martin, who finished third after sitting out two races, are former Texas winners.

Burton won with an average speed of 143.359 mph and was the last of nine leaders. Gordon, the points leader who started on the pole after qualifying was canceled because of storms, led four times and Dale Earnhardt Jr. had three leads for 96 laps.

Isn’t it funny I posted my Montoya Minute & a lot of conversation during the race was centered around Juan Pablo? What a kawinkydink, huh? ;) I doubt very much “big guys” like DW are reading my blog. It’s weird Montoya was talked about a lot today though. ;)

Texas tid-bits & my Montoya minute

Here’s a few stories & thoughts to share on this gloomy day in Buffalo.

Bud Pole quals at Texas canceled as confusion rains
Gordon will start on pole, Burton on outside of front row

FORT WORTH, Texas — With severe weather warnings — including wind gusts in excess of 60 mph –tornado watches, hail and heavy rain issued late Friday afternoon, NASCAR canceled Bud Pole Qualifying for Sunday’s Samsung 500 at Texas Motor Speedway just before 6 p.m. local time.

Because of the decision, which was made about 40 minutes before the first car was scheduled to roll off pit road, Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton will lead the 43-car field to the green flag Sunday afternoon.

Gordon, who already has two poles this season and 58 in his career, will not officially be credited with one for this race since the lineup was set through owner points (top 35 positions), with the balance set per the 2007 Nextel Cup Series rulebook.

Texas is one of only three racetracks on the circuit on which Gordon has failed to win a Cup race. Burton won the inaugural Cup race at Texas, which was the only time in 12 races that qualifying has been canceled, though bad weather has affected a number of TMS weekends.

Juan Pablo Montoya is doing something right this year. It’s his first time racing on Nextel/Busch tracks & when you watch Montoya he likes to be different. Hugging the outside wall. He passes on the outside a lot easier too. Having Atlanta as his best finish at 5th, “Where’s Juan?” has been the biggest question around Nascar.com.
