Recycle, Reduce… ReArt! :-)

I got this in my email and I’m thinking of going.

BUFFALO ReUSE, a local non-profit organization, observes its first year anniversary October 18th from 7-10pm at Gallery 141b on Elmwood Ave by hosting a party and art exhibition. The exhibition features eighteen WNY artists who incorporate salvaged materials and architectural treasures in their work.

The purpose of the exhibition is to promote creative exploration of salvaged materials. Each work was initiated with objects headed for a landfill after a demolition. Some pieces incorporate objects rescued from the curb on “big trash” days. The discarded materials were chosen by the artist and then ReDESTINED into a new existence.

There are over thirty works on view, including re-interpreted functional pieces such as Richard Rockford’s mirrors. Richard expressed his intentions for his work, “I want the viewer to literally come face-to-face with the past, to see the real value in something of little or no value, and to be transformed in the way they view this aspect of our world.” There are hand-crafted tables and a kitchen cart constructed by Bruce Beyer. You will see several examples of floor sculptures, metal work and stained glass pieces by Carol Henry. Finally, drawings by Peggy Matteliano, photography and a large installation by architectural sculptor, Dennis Maher, also round out the show.

Over the past year BUFFALO ReUSE has spearheaded hybrid deconstruction as one solution to the multiple challenges The City of Buffalo faces as a result of urban abandonment. The City has ambitious plans to demolish 1,000 structures a year for the next ten years at a cost to taxpayers of over $100 million. Although the plan will make Buffalo more attractive to developers, it mentions few specifics about the stewardship of reusable resources or vacant lot management. BUFFALO ReUSE has asked the questions: How can we minimize the waste of reusable materials and keep more of Buffalo’s architectural treasures here, where they can be cherished? Where will all the tons of rubble be buried? What will happen once the structures are gone?

Multiple challenges require multiple solutions, but BUFFALO ReUSE has instigated plans for tackling all of them using Buffalo’s rich community of activists, artists, homeowners, block clubs and neighbors. Executive Director, Michael Gainer, and the new full-time deconstruction crew want to use this opportunity to acknowledge the skills and time of the volunteers who have helped the organization accomplish so much of its current success through their dedication and generous talents. BUFFALO ReUSE welcomes all who share a desire to improve Buffalo neighborhoods by joining us in this art-filled celebration. Refreshments are provided.

Montana… of the Hannah variety

It’s all over the news channels about this girl who is known as Hannah Montana. She is a pop icon/actress well on her way to fame. (I’m glad I have boys to escape the frenzy ;) )

It’s heartbreaking to her fans that ticket sales are selling out in minutes by brokers that are reselling the tickets to her show upto 10 times their face value.

What a way to kill the music industry. Using greed to stop preteen & teenage girls from seeing their fave star. :( It’s no wonder people resort to illegal downloading on the internet.

I’m still not feeling 100% so I didn’t take the time to provide links, but if you search the internet you’ll find endless info on the topic.
